With the rising demand for game designers across Canada, the Game Design Bootcamp was created to prepare students with the skills and professional network needed to launch a career in the industry.

Program Outcomes


Program Outcomes

Over the course of 30 weeks, you will acquire the skills needed to analyze game design elements, conceive gameplay concepts, and design game mechanics with various tools. You will also learn about the role of game designer, its various specializations, and how they fit into video game production.

Learners take their new skills to the next level on challenging projects, working with their peers to create functioning game prototypes, and test novel gameplay concepts to showcase their game design knowledge. Students will gain experience in Unreal Engine to prototype their game ideas - giving them a competitive edge in the job market.

Students receive a Digital Badge from UBC Extended Learning and Circuit Stream, showcasing their accomplishments to future employers.

Students benefit from a wide array of career support services like resume and networking support, technical interview preparation, portfolio reviews, soft skills training, and 1:1 coaching to help them put their best foot forward in the industry.

Vancouver is known for being a hub in the video game industry, with a significant presence of game studios, ranging from independent indie studios to internationally recognized companies. Several well-known game studios have a presence in Vancouver, including Electronic Arts (EA), Capcom Vancouver, Relic Entertainment, Ubisoft, and many others. These studios often work on blockbuster titles and franchises.


According to the Vancouver Economic Commission, the city boasts more than 170 development studios producing world-class games, generating billions in annual revenue and employing thousands of people in Vancouver. Results from the Entertainment Software Association of Canada's 2021 industry survey share that video game companies contribute $5.5 billion to Canada’s GDP and employ 32,000 full-time professionals, an increase of 17 per cent since 2019. The city's robust tech industry and presence of skilled professionals in areas such as programming, design, art, and storytelling contribute to the growth of the video game industry.


Game designers in Vancouver are responsible for conceptualizing game ideas, creating game mechanics, designing levels, characters, and gameplay systems.
